In times of war, youngsters are the majorly recruited and perhaps the most affected. This is because they are easily manipulated into accepting the established ideologies. In most cases, these youngsters are trained to be brutal murderers and most of them end up losing their humanity but there are a few who are brave enough to stand back and question the ways that they had to take. Some of them retrace their paths and are redeemed. However, those who fear are forced into accepting tormenting situations such as an unjust system with misleading ideologies (Stachura, 1975). Werner, in the novel “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr, thinks that his soul was lost during the war. This is contrary to what the author proposes in the novel as he suggests that Werner must have lost his soul when he began to fear the rise of the Hitler movement, which was a long time ago when he was a young boy. It is through conquering this fear that one achieves redemption. However, when one fails to conquer fear, he fails to redeem his soul. To achieve this, the paper uses the context and text-based interpretation methods of approach as well as the New Criticism Theory.
