WHO IS TO BLAME FOR MACBETH’S DOWNFALL?
In Macbeth’s play, several characters are involved in his downfall. Lady Macbeth, the three witches and Macbeth himself are responsible for the tragedy. The three witches incite him with statements of being a king, Lady Macbeth convinces him while Macbeth himself follows his ambition disregarding his conscience.
In the play’s opening, the three witches arrive amid ‘thunder and lightning’, creating a dark and menacing ambiance, while foreshadowing the approaching calamity. They give prophecies that play the role of prompts that effect and obscure Macbeth’s “overreaching aspiration”. This misguides him by making him believe that he is indestructible through dishonest use of prevarication, which subconsciously starts controlling his destiny. Although the witches don't tell him what to do, they simply disclose the future and reproach his during his high states of vulnerability, instigating him with deceptive statements such as "none of woman born shall harm Macbeth" which he blindly believes and influence his actions. Through their acts, Macbeth’s ‘deepest desires’ are manipulated to lead him falsely and leads to the tragedy.
Lady Macbeth plays a vital role leading to Macbeth's downfall. She deceptively manipulates Macbeth's thoughts, actions, and emotions through her immorality. She is bent on achieving her ambitions by influencing Macbeth during his vulnerable state. A good example is when she criticizes him of being a coward “And live a coward”.
