William Wordsworth is credited for having initiated the Romantic Era through his richly sensual, emotional and deeply non-formal form of prose. In elucidating Wordsworth’s genius in ‘The Prelude’ one has to examine the very life of the author, the society and more importantly the tragic element of existence during the era. One of the most richly and suitably expressed quote in ‘The Prelude’ from whence this analysis of Wordsworth is tailored is one often quoted to situation and exemplify the momentous time in which the author lived. Wordsworth is expressing the very reality of the life in England. The author analyses the very natural and sentimentality of art in expressing human dignity while also preserving a crucial element of naturalness in the state of existence. In the phrase, the author tries to situation the occasion of his youthfulness as something comparable to heaven itself. The author very skilfully intertwined religious sentiment with naturalism and the ideas of the time which tried to challenge principles of religion and exemplified queer natural sciences of the era. Heaven is thought to be our eternal destination where Christians will dwell with the Lord forever in a state of Bliss. The turn of the century between the 18th and the 19th centuries were not a very easy time for the English. It was a time of great religious upheavals, rebellion with the Roman Catholic Church, major industrial and social movement of huge populations to cities and a lot of intense ideological clashes raged in politics and economics. Wordsworth must have viewed himself as arriving at some peak time of human civilization or progress and the experiences drove his wits and feelings to an almost bizarre sentimentality. When the author says, ‘Bliss it was in that dawn to be alive’ he could be alluding at the tremendous changes occurring from science and industrial expansions. Nevertheless, he could be romanticizing the fact that new ideas and scientific ideals were shaking the very foundations of Catholicism which undoubtedly for him and other scholars had created some sort of ideological darkness by preventing an avalanche of revolutionary ideas from taking shape.
