Harriet Hanson Robinson makes it clear that the girls and women who worked in the corporations in Lowell, Massachusetts were recruited daughters of New England farmers aged from 15-35 years. While at Lowell Mills, these young females had numerous opportunities that enabled some of them to lead better lives.
Women and girls working in Lowell Mills had an advantage since they earned regular cash. Despite the working conditions being not so attractive, workers were compensated. For instance, women got money to feed their families and started being independent of their husbands. For girls like Harriet, they were advantaged in that they would have used the money they earned to enroll in education institutions (Hoffman et al. 230). In reality, after working for some time in Lowell Mills, Harriet left the job and attended a school where she learned English, Latin, and French. Consequently, working women and girls had an opportunity to learn since they would cater to their needs without relying on their husbands and parents respectively.
