Introduction
Obesity is generally a condition where by the excess fat in the body has accumulated in such a way it may lead to some negative effects in the body which may lead to life expectancy being shortened.
Background
Information about the major discipline
The major discipline is the food science and technology; it ensures the safety of food to everyone. American Samoa, we are the largest island that is mostly affected by obesity. This condition however has been said to be more prevailing in Samoa due to poor food as well as beverage environment. In Samoa most of the evaluations have not been conducted but in January 2014, we as the American Samoa established a talk about obesity and later develop strategies and policies so as to try and fight away obesity in the region. We also conducted an assessment of the availability, promotion as well pricing of the healthful foods at the retail food venues. (John, 2009)
According to some samples that were conducted, it was evident that some healthy items were found to be more expensive than the less healthy items. In some restaurants also, it was found that 70% of the dishes were less healthy and the rest 30% of the dishes were healthy, which included vegetables. The restaurants did not have enough information on how to reduce calorie while preparing their dishes. When we as the American Samoa embrace and improve on the availability, affordability as well as promoting healthful foods in our stores and also in our restaurants, we will be in the right track of helping the Samoa residents from this condition.
Obesity is mostly cause by excessive energy from food with lack of any physical exercise. But also in some cases obesity is said to be caused primarily by genes, endocrine disorders, medications as well as psychiatric illness. We the American Samoa have greatly emphasized on the diet and also exercise. These two are the main treatment of obesity this is because diet quality can be improved by first reducing the intake of food that are more of energy, such as those foods with high fat and high levels of sugar, also increasingly taking food rich in fiber. When one follows all these kind of foods that have been given, the anti-obesity drugs are thereby used only to reduce appetite as well as reduce fat absorption. (Heldman, (2006)
If the diet, exercise and the prescribed medication are not effective, then a gastric balloon can be used so that it can help reduce the weight. Also some form of surgery might be performed to reduce the stomach volume which helps in feeling full most of the time as well as a reduced ability to absorb nutrients from food. (Mc greevy,2005)
Skills that majors should graduate with
Obesity is one of the condition that really affect those people who like taking in much of the energy giving foods with no or minimal exercise. We have learnt most of the skills which will be helpful to us as the American Samoa. First is that the imported foods are mostly transported by sea and they are however processed so as to prolong their lives. Some of the foods that were regarded as healthy food included fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, frozen foods, frozen vegetables, canned fruits, canned vegetables as well as canned beans. On the other hand the foods that were considered less healthy included lean meat, low sugar cereals, whole grain breads, reduced fat dairy products and also canned soup.(Fumento,1997).
In American Samoa according to some research, the findings were that fresh fruits and fresh vegetables were available in the most of the grocery stores than in the convenience stores but the prices were much more comparable. An example was the availability of the Chinese cabbage which was 100% and the price was roughly $1.32/1b ($2.91/kg) in the grocery stores it was 38% and an average price of $1.38/1b ($3.04/kg) in the convenience stores. Most of the healthy foods were not found in the convenience stores this was basically because the healthy foods were so much expensive than the less healthy foods.
Another type of skill that can be gained is that of pharmacotherapy, this is however a method that is used to reduce weight loss which is used to couple behavioral approaches. We also advice on commercial weight loss programs, which advices most of the people on the best ways to reduce weight and also on how to keep physically fit. (John, 1999)
