Benefits of Deception to Patients
Yes. Deception can benefit the patient to a great extent. Even though the principles of autonomy in medical practice require physicians to acquire informed consent as well as informed agreement from the patient before any investigation, diagnosis or treatment is done to the patient; the fact remains that some situation call for deception or paternalism. In situations where the patient health is at risk, and the only option that a physician has is that which the patient does not agree with, the physician has to exercise superiority and deny the patient the freedom to choose in order to save a life. As Thomas explains in chapter 4 of the text, the truth may be withheld from the patient for compassionate reasons.
