General Causes of Heart Problems
Heart diseases- also called cardiovascular diseases (CVDs)- is a term that represents a plethora of pathologies of the heart and blood vessels. These diseases vary in severity: patients can suffer chronically from some, while others cause debilitating injury and are often fatal. High blood pressure or hypertension is a familiar example of a cardiovascular disease. Although epidemiologists do not provide such a distinction, in medical practice, heart diseases also refer to a specific class of cardiovascular conditions of the heart. These include heart attacks (or myocardial infarction), stroke (of which there are several varieties), various cardiomyopathies, and an assortment of cardiac dysrhythmias. This essay, however, does not explore the phenomenology and classifications of these conditions, but rather, their general causes.
Causes of heart or cardiovascular diseases are referred to as risk factors since they predispose one to pathology.
