Student name Instructor Name Course Due Task 1 In the News – Indonesia syrup Deaths: Parents demand accountability as death toll rises (Mao and Baraputri) Description of Event The number of deaths of toddlers aged below 5 years of age has been prevalent in Indonesia and is thought to be caused by contaminated medication; specifically cough syrup. These children were given cough syrup when they started showing signs of fever and cold so their parents bought fever cough syrup and fed them to medicate them. In one case, one of the children would get better but then get sick again. Most of the children before they passed away had stopped urinating before dying. The Indonesian government banned around 100 products suspected of being contaminated while pharmacies advised parents to crush pills for their children instead of using liquid medicine. Significance to Healthcare Healthcare experts and organizations must be vigilant and learn from the incident as this is an example of medical negligence. They are responsible for ensuring that the medication they prescribe does not harm their patients and that they must find alternatives to address the growing panic of medication deprivation for children. They also must ensure that they are providing measures to address changes in care for children who have a fever and the possibility of fast-acting acute kidney failure. Organizational Behavior(s) Organizational behavior explains that formal organizational settings like the business world or corporations are structured in a way that requires structure and management (Buchanan and Huczynzski, p.4-30). In this case, bureaucracy is the organizational structure presented in the setting. Bureaucracy is a form of structure that presents the need to have guidelines, procedures as well as requirements to create a chain of command that is based highly on the importance of someone’s position in the system (Weber, 1864 – 1920). The news setting has evidence that this structure is used because of the Badan Pengawas Obat and Ma Kanan (BPOM), Indonesia’s food and drug administration, and the pharmacies. Initially, the BPOM were supposed to be vigilant and wary of medications being tampered with because weeks ago, 70 Gambia children had passed away due to cough syrup contamination as well. The BPOM should have started investigating – even before that, they should have been setting and enforcing health guidelines and management of drugs that are distributed to the general population. Pharmacies were only able to pull the cough syrups out when the government said so and the BPOM has only acted when the death toll reached an all-time high. This is consistent with Henri Fayol’s Management Process Theory. Management process theory is a model that talks about how management interacts with personnel (Brooks). In this case, the management is BPOM and the staff personnel is pharmacies, instead of hospitals because they are the direct figure in drug distribution. BPOM has been absent in most of the management process and has only been in the commanding and coordinating as well as controlling processes – these are when the distribution of output occurs and it is evident that BPOM has only been in this process because otherwise, the contamination of cough syrup would not have happened – they would have been in the organizing and planning where they oversee the validity and safety of the drugs. What could have prevented the Event The key prevention to eliminating this event would be the constant and vigilant screening and testing of all pharmaceutical companies and their products. The BPOM are responsible for this and yet they have demonstrated that they have failed to do so despite it being their responsibility. Pharmacies across Indonesia and consumers are not at fault because they had trusted that the drugs distributed to them had been screened and tested by the BPOM. Recommendations for the Event A recommendation for this incident is for the BPOM to be consistent in its role as a bureau for drug testing. As well as to allow for some form of communication response between the pharmacies and hospitals to the BPOM and encourage feedback on potentially growing concerns Works Cited Brooks, Chad. “Management Theory of Henri Fayol.” Business.com, 29 June 2022, https://www.business.com/articles/management-theory-of-henri-fayol/. Task 2 My score in the Mindtools Decision-Making Assessment is 64 – which means that my decision-making process is ok but that I do not delve too much into developing the system I use for decision-making. My decision-making process can vary depending on how much or how willing I am to put effort and time into implementing my decisions. However, the type of decision-making I prefer the most is a cross between rational and bounded rationality decision-making. I’m fully aware of my limitations when I choose to pursue a problem and being aware of that allows me to choose whether I will intuitively choose an alternate solution or approach it with my biased perspective. My decision-making process goes like this: identify a problem I want to solve, assess it and see if I could be bothered to create or offer solutions, assess the extent of effort, and resources in implementing that solution (s) would entail, assess how big of an impact the problem is to implement either solution and if I find it impactful, I will move on to assess the solutions. During the assessment of the solutions, I weigh the future outcomes that these solutions can create. For example, if A = XXXX but has negative connotations like disgust or complaints or low productivi...
