Roles of School Nurses
Introduction
School nursing practice started in the United States in 1902.During this time, a nurse was hired to help lessen the rate of absenteeism by intervening with the students and families in matters of healthcare as related to communicable diseases. Being the first school nurse, Lina Rogers helped in implementing school-based nurse practice across the city of New York (Peate & Kare 65). Since then, the role of school nursing has expanded dramatically and spread to all schools in the United States. The purpose of school nurses is general and dependent on many factors such as the settings of a school, health requirements of the students and presence of support special programs in a school.
As part of their responsibility, school nurses promote normal growth and positive student reactions to interventions. They accomplish this by ensuring the health needs of students are met including those with special needs. School nurses create health programs for students which entail health assessments and interventions. They develop a healthy environment within a school set up by educating students and other staffs on matters of health. To achieve this, nurses liaise with the catering staff and physical education teachers (Chenevert & Melodie 78).
In collaboration with external health sectors, school nurses update treatments of various ailments amongst students and staffs. They deal with chronic diseases and injuries that are encountered in the school. In fatal cases, school -based nurses organize for further treatments that might not be available within a school. This will include identification of appropriate health sector that will be able to handle the situation.
