The autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is perhaps the earliest account of the achievement of the “American Dream”. In this literally work, his musings are a perfect rendition of how a lower middle class individual from some undistinguished environ of Boston, can, through sheer determination and a strong work ethic, rise through societal ranks to be one of the most admired and emulated persons in the world. His work was full of advice to colonial America on how to achieve the American dream. He was convinced that truth, sincerity and integrity were of the utmost importance in achieving the American dream (Garfinkel).
This was a significant departure from the economic and class structure of then Europe, where there were clearly two classes, the poor and the rich, and the poor got rich by chance and luck. This did not augur well with Benjamin Franklin. He felt and believed that Americans could fashion their own economic and social statuses through sheer hard work and shrewdly seizing opportunities. According to Franklin, to those who worked hard, the opportunities were endless and limitless.
