Prompt 3: What is the Ideal Society?
The definition of an ideal society is dictated by the people living in it. Therefore, a society can be ideal from the view of some and to others, it may not. Indeed, people in the same society can have a different opinion on how ideal it is. Martin Luther King, dreamed of an ideal society which did not have segregation and racial discrimination, and where everybody was treated equally (“I Have A Dream”). But, then, the people who were discriminating against others; where white Americans were discriminating against people of color, found it to be an ideal society. If a white American was asked then, a considerable number of the could argue that they were living in an ideal society. This could be confirmed from the history of the United States where for a long time, people of color had continually been discriminated against, even after slavery had been abolished. African Americans were denied rights to vote until the time, and again activists such as Malcolm X stood and spoke for the minority populations, especially the African Americans, leading peaceful demonstrations pushing for voting rights. These demonstrations became violent until the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed by the Congress, leaving 35 people dead and others injured (Jeffries 207). This evidently shows that people have different views of an ideal society where white Americans before 1965 found it appropriate for people of color and women not participating in elections while the people of color and women found it ideal when they had the rights to elect their leaders (Jeffries 207).
