Identity and Ethnicity in Campus. History Assignment (Essay Sample)

Instructions:

Check the instructions (File attached).
I did the Journal (Field notes), and now I have to do the 3-4 pages paper.
The 4 pages paper will have to connect my field notes with the book: "The edge of Islam". It should be about code-switching and the way it marks boundaries and indexes assumptions about significant social and cultural differences. I think you should focus on explaining how the author sees language ideologies and code-switching and use that to understand some of the shifts between French and English that I saw during the field work.
I will attach the book as a pdf file (we studied only 3 chapters of the book). I can also send you a paper from another student that can help you. However, don't paraphrase it or copy it, but it can help you. Of course, you can take some things from it, but not 100%.

Identity and Ethnicity in Campus
Introduction
Members of the French Association in the NY University come from all francophone diversities. The institution offers a room for French non- native speakers to learn and acquire knowledge and skills of using the language. Besides, the club provides a platform for social integration, which serves the purpose of teaching and learning different aspects of the French culture to other ethnic groups. An observation done on activities and interactions within the club proves that the coexistence between the native and non- native speakers of French is mutual and that there are no significant groups disparities except the pride that the natives take in code-switching when speaking to non- native speakers of French. Usually, the natives in the club code- switch to the English or French language when talking to the non- native French speakers who feel left out when the language changes. The code-switching is made to identify with a particular group, i.e., the natives would want to code-switch to exclusively confidential information in the presence of races that know little French. Also, code-switching to the English language primarily identifies the speaker with a particular social class. This paper discusses the social and cultural inequities brought about by code-switching from English to French and vice versa.
