The Slave Community
The previous studies done by early historians indicate that the Africa American Slaves were known for their submissive nature to their masters. The joy of the slaves was entirely dependent on the master-slave relationship in the southern plantations. Blassingame refutes this fact as he gives account on the slave community in the southern plantations. For him, the historians did very little in analyzing the life and experiences of the African American slaves in the south. Instead, they chose to get the side of the slave masters or owners alone. This approach by the historians assumed that the African Slaves were no-longer attached to their traditional culture, music, language, family life or religion. These cultural components spearheaded the formation of a new slave community and culture in the Southern plantations.
Blassingame believes that while the Africans lived away from their active cultural practice, the slaves held onto the remnants of their African cultures which they silently practiced while away from the surveillance of their masters. The slaves spent a better part of their time in their quarters where they were not watched by the masters, through this, the slaves managed to have control of their lives while in the quarters, did things that according to them they viewed as important hence they gained a sense of worth (Blassingame).
