The Lewis and Clark Expedition
The Lewis and Clark expedition is arguably the first documented expedition crossing the now Western portion of the country United States. The expedition departed on May 1804 from Mississippi river on Saint Louis and proceeded to make way through the Pacific Coast continental divide (Patricia 20). This expedition also goes by the name “Corps of Discovery Expedition.” Soon after the famous Louisiana Purchase, the then president on the United States, Thomas Jefferson commissioned the expedition in 1804. It consisted of a selected group of volunteers from the U.S Army with Captain Meriwether Lewis together with his close ally Second Lieutenant William Clark as the commanders of the troop. The main objective of the two-year expedition was to reconnoiter and map the freshly acquired territory of the United States and try and discovery a way across the western half of the continent.
