The popularity of Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass
Frederick Douglass was born in Maryland into slavery in the year 1818. In Eastern, Maryland, Douglass served as a slave on firms at his young age. Douglass enjoyed the freedom, and this helped him read and begun to be in contact with learned blacks (Douglass 14). Douglass later moved to New York, where he married a black woman from Baltimore, and the two settled in New Bedford, Massachusetts, where he took self-education and served as a laborer. Douglass attended the first abolitionist meeting in 1841 and spoke to the crowd about his slavery experience (Douglass 20). Douglass met Garrison, who employed him as an abolitionist representative in the Anti-slavery Society.
Douglass traveled in the northern states from 1841 to 1845, together with Garrison speaking of slavery and injustice. He experienced severe opposition from many Americans who did not believe in him, and this happened even within the Anti-slavery Society. From the Narrative responses to this opposition are addressed by himself, Douglass used real names of places and people, which further quieted those who had questions about his truth and slaver (Douglass 124).
