Douglass enjoyed the freedom, and this helped him read and begun to be in contact with learned blacks (Douglass 14). Douglass later moved to New York, where he married a black woman from Baltimore, and the two settled in New Bedford, Massachusetts, where he took self-education and served as a laborer. Douglass attended the first abolitionist meeting in 1841 and spoke to the crowd about his slavery experience (Douglass 20). Douglass met Garrison, who employed him as an abolitionist representative in the Anti-slavery Society.
