Reasons for the Defeat of Napoleon
Napoleon was eventually defeated at the battle of Waterloo at the hands of the Duke of Wellington, bringing a halt to his stellar era in European history. The battle fought at Waterloo is regarded as one of the most significant in the entire history. France was on the one side while Prussia, Great Britain, and their allies were on the other side. To Napoleon, the battle of Waterloo was an attempt to redeem himself not only in France but the entirety of Europe given that he had already faced defeat in 1814. No single reason could be given to explain the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo. It was rather a combination of factors that included the resistance of the British, the leadership provided by Wellington, their superior cavalry, and the prompt arrival of the Prussian army.
The arrival of the Prussian army is usually cited as the primary reason to explain why Napoleon faced defeat. Napoleon and the entire French army were taken by surprise because they had not envisioned such a situation. Napoleon had not considered any possibility of the arrival of the Prussian army.
