Stereotypes Surrounding Black and White People
Introduction
Stereotypes are certain beliefs towards attributes, positions, and roles in society that are assigned to different people in the society; depending on their gender, religion, and race. In advertising, racial stereotyping is not always viewed to be negative but as a harmful influence that makes stereotypes appear normal. It is known that advertisers always use the existing societal ideologies for their commercial purposes. In specific demographics, racial stereotyping has both positive and negative effects. Racial stereotyping brings about negativity when the stereotyping begins to cause offenses. Some people in a group always find it offensive when their people are distributed unequally in their media. Some people on the other hand are contented with the distribution of people in their media so long as depictions are successful and will not cause any harm.
Media is highly associated with the real-world outcomes of its representation of Asian immigrants. Through media, Asians have been used to represent a perception of the Americans rather than real customs, cultures, and behaviors. This has made Asians experience discrimination since they are always subjected to hate crimes. These hate crimes are always subjected to them concerning their ethnic stereotype. A good example of a fictional stereotype present is through Charlie Chan who represents a threatening and apologetically submissive character. Asian men are also represented as predators through various propagandas. Asian women are also represented as gold diggers predators. This has in return made the Asian women submissive and quiet in presence of male figures.
Asian people have been stereotyped as foreigners perpetually. Asians are still viewed as foreigners despite them having United States citizenship. Asians are also stereotyped as a “model minority”. They are thought of as having all the positive traits like studious, intelligent, and hard-working. Asians are also viewed to represent those people who are above average in education. They are always thought to achieve higher success in socioeconomic and related fields. This has made them be subjected to harassment and bullying from other races. This is very sad as this model minority stereotype does not protect Asians from any discrimination or harassment.
