The Congress is broken
It is clear and true to say that the Congress is broken. The 113th congress has proved to be unloved by the American citizens. This is because all through the 113th Session, the Republicans being many in the House have been able to keep at bay the government. It has been a strategy to obstruct and keep the administration on toes. Bills brought in the house most of them have not passed through the house. The administration being led by the minority in the house has lacked control of the major decisions made at the floor of the house. In this case, the Republicans have ensured to keep it that the president does not sail through with the strategies that he needs to govern the republic.
The Congress has always ensured policy disagreements with the Democrats and ensured total sabotage to the administration. An example is foreign policy that has been a major agenda by the President. This policy has long been shortchanged, with a major role being played by the majorities in the house. The major roles of the Congress being to pass the laws that affect the daily lives of the Americans, this role and duty have not been clearly evidenced by the house. As (Orszag) puts it, the Congress has only bowed down to the few bills recently, leaving the American population at their mercies. Taking a case of a health bill that assumed much presidential veto power the house agreed to it.
For progress in every nation, there is the need for all the houses to work together for a common goal. The Transpacific Partnership bill widely supported by the Republicans who would also provide for free trade has been hard to let it sail through. Well analyzed it is enough to say that the House has exercised and portrayed in action. The presidency has also stated clearly in one of the functions and termed the Congress as less productive.
Bills that the presidency and the ruling party have been ensuring to bring on board are received with mixed reaction. The comprehensive amnesty bill, gun control and many more are not popular with the public. The house is not expected to bow to the pressure of anyone in the role of leadership and especially the presidency. Obstruction has been the major concept being devised by the Congress against partnering with the presidency to ensure growth and development. According to the (The do-nothing Congress: Who's at fault?) Post by the Washington Times, the inaction by the Congress has been attributed to their leader. Around this tenure, the Congress has passed only 285 bills with most of them coming from bipartisan support. It has seen it as the least productive Congress. The previous house passed about 564 bills, (Eldridge)
The expectations of many towards the performance of the Congress even in the new session starting from January 2015 are low and more disappointments are expected in the house. The economy that has been recovering for now had for the past experienced sharp decline and under performance mainly because the government spending cannot be approved (Orszag). The house has also been known to act in ways that contradict the actions of the presidency.
Contradiction of the main role of the presidency depicts the Congress as not fully playing its role as the representative of the people. The mind of the people when electing congressmen is representation. When the Congress then fails in action to deliver this major role reduces to just mere members of the house. Being a government oversight is seen as the majority role of the Congress. Recently, the Congress has downplayed or polarized the government's foreign policy; this move has not only torn apart the ...
