Introduction
The American civil war (1861-65) was fought between the United States and 11 southern states that disaffiliated from the union to form the Confederation States of America (Rable and George, 2016). The American civil war necessitated the creation of a powerful central national government that could solve the emerging crisis and consequently promote the development of the nation.
The Development of a Strong Central National Government
The civil war threatened the unity among the states that constitute the United States. The overarching diverse ideologies between the southern and northern states hindered government operations. On one frontier, the south was pro-slavery while the north was anti-slavery. At the end of the civil war, there was an immense loss of lives and resources from both sides. Social cohesion also suffered where the parties involved in the war perceived the other party as their opponents (Rable and George, 2016).
