It applies mathematics and other algorithmic foundations. It also traverses the aspect of both software and hardware development. As a result, roles range from designing new models to solving computer problems, implementing and evaluating computer systems, or even coding/programming. Tools suitable in computer science include computers, editors, compilers, interpreters, debuggers, networking software, and many more. On the other hand, the information system domain deals with an integrated set of systems implemented to collect, store, and process information (Rainer et al.). This is highly related to computer science because the systems in use combine computer hardware and software and also entail other critical aspects such as networking. However, the main difference between the two is that information system is more practical-based, while computer science might involve theoretical frameworks or foundations (Hazzan et al.). Tools commonly suitable for information systems include database management systems, computers, and networking software. Engineering integrates various disciplines and fields, such as computer science and electrical engineering, to research, design, and test computer systems. While thought to venture mainly into hardware, engineering also highly integrates software. What distinguishes engineering from the rest is its emphasis on developing and testing new computer systems (Hazzan et al.). Tools used in the engineering field include computers with computer-aided design software and programming tools such as editors and compilers. Other tools applicable in engineering are signal generators, oscilloscopes, and multimeters. Information technology is highly related to information systems. However, one distinction is that while information system incorporates the processes involved with information, information technology focuses on the design and implementation aspect within the system. Ultimately, both work to support the collection, storage, and retrieval of information or data. Software utilities, especially database management, are essential tools in information technology. Others include networking software, computers, and telecommunication equipment. Programming and Scripting Programming involves the use of programming languages to write executable computer programs (Ben et al.) Scripting, on the other hand, is the use of scripting programming language to customize or automate an already existing system/ runtime environment (Bourne). One of the unique differences between the two is that, unlike programming languages where a code is compiled, scripts do not require compilers but are interpreted. An IT professional can use a programing language to design and develop a software program for commercial use, such as in the banking sector. On the other hand, an IT professional can use scripting to automate repetitive tasks and optimize long processes within applications already in use. Careers The entry-level career within my interest is being a computer programmer. Computer programmers are specialists whose roles transverse from writing, revising, and testing to updating code (Swed). This requires proficiency in several programming languages, as typically, the job might include finding bugs and revising code for errors. This career is more inclined toward the discipline of computer science and also shares some relative similarities with engineering. A mid-level career of interest is being a software developer. While they share high similarities with computer programmers, a software developer is more like a designer who perceives software development from a holistic perspective and is interested in how the end user will interact with the software. This role often includes bringing together several computer programmers and working in collaboration while offering guidance to execute and achieve. Even so, they are required to have a strong background in writing, testing, and fixing code (Swed). Thus, this career is also inclined toward the computer science discipline. Ultimately, I would want to rise to the ranks of a chief technology officer within a software development department/organization. This main duty in this role includes overseeing and guiding the development of software programs, systems, and applications within the department/organization (Swed). It requires a blend of managerial skills and a strong background in software development, where one not only understands writing, testing, and execution of code but also has relevant experience within middle-level management. This career can be associated with both computer science and engineering since teams being guided could include various professionals within the IT field. Tools A computer programmer requires a computer with the necessary programming software such as Python, C++, C language, Java, C#, and PHP (Ben et al.). These allow a programmer to write instructions to a computer which can be compiled using a compiler for execution. Other relevant tools include interpreters and debuggers, among others.
