Effect of Trying Children who Murder as Adults
The late decade of the 20th century experienced an upsurge in high profile juvenile criminal activities. In tandem with the trend, the early decades of the 21st century have continued to witness violent juvenile crimes with some resulting in murders. There has been an increased public consensus that violent juveniles should be culpable for their criminal activities similar to adults. Both policymakers and ordinary citizens feel that serious juvenile offenders who are beyond rehabilitation should be held accountable for their actions to ensure public safety. The notion of trying juveniles involved in murders in the adult justice system is a controversial topic. Those in favor of the debate argue that juvenile courts are too lenient to contain the vice. On the hand, those against the debate note that trying juveniles as adult violets their rights while denying them the opportunity to be rehabilitated. Though all murders should be treated with the same contempt, trying children who murder as adults is harmful to their lives.
