In human beings, the knee joins the leg with the thigh. Additionally, the knee joint is made up of two joints: the first is the tibio-femoral joint while the second is the patellofemoral joint. As a compound joint, the knee is the largest joint in the human body, allowing flexion and extension as well as external and internal rotation. Injuries of the knees are common. In addition, the knee is prone to developing osteoarthritis CITATION Häg16 \l 1033 (Hägglund & Waldén, 2016). Pain in the knee can be caused by arthritis, degeneration, trauma, and misalignment. Prepatellar bursitis is an inflammation of the prepatellar bursa which is often painful and is due to occupational activities. Common injuries of the knee due to physical activity include anterior cruciate ligament injuries, torn meniscus injuries, fractures as well as ruptured tendons.
Arthroscopy is a surgical intervention used by medical practitioners to look at, diagnose as well as treat joint problems. This is usually an outpatient procedure. One of the advantages that arthroscopy has over the traditional open surgeries is that the joints do not have to be fully opened up.
