Television has not only revolutionized the exchange of information but also modes of learning. Recently, television is catering for both entertainment and teaching. The emergence of numerous science television shows since the early fifties is proof (National Geographic). There are science television programs that contribute to the development and spread of science. Examples of these are not only programs but channels dedicated to science are national geographic and the discovery channel. It is therefore important to explore the various channels offering science programs and the quality of information offered.
‘Human Body-Pushing the Limits’. The title of the program gives an idea of what the program should be about. Produced and aired by the discovery channel, the program is about the human body (Discovery Channel). Not only dos it explain different functions of different parts but also their significance to survival. ‘Pushing the limits’ shows that the body can go to limits human beings may not be even remotely aware of. The show is thus an illustration of various ways humans, through the use of only their natural organs survive adverse events in daily life.
Further, although the show seems complicated and comprehensible to scientists and adults only, it is not. The program has illustration in three dimension. Through these illustrations and well organized animated prompts the show give a comprehensive guide to understating the working of the human body. Some of the featured topics on the episodes of the program are: the brain, locomotion, and nutrition and survival tactics which include strength and brainpower (Discovery Channel). Illustrations to all the mentioned topics are given comprehensively with pointers to show different organs and a well-articulated voice to take the audience through the discussions.
Science programs like the one mentioned above is paramount to learning new things and even basic survival skills. For instance, the episode on ‘the brain-pushing the limits is very educative. From the program, the audience gets to discover the potential of the human brain. This proves very useful information to an audience who had no idea of how the brain works. This means that even without a degree in neuro-science the audience understands the brain almost as much as the scientist. Lastly, to cement the content on the program, real life witnesses are brought in to talk about their encounters in events that made their organs push the limits. This acts as an authenticity marker for the program.
