I think that parents should also have an opinion on who the teacher of their child is, but only up to a certain extent. Parents should also serve as guidance for their children on how to handle the teacher in any circumstance. If in case the child is not happy with the teacher, they can consult their parents about it so they can tell their kids how to handle it properly so it won't be detrimental to their studies, but letting the school know will be an option if other parents have a similar experience.
Mr. Alonzo Lucas should talk to the parents with an open mind so he can welcome their perspectives. It does not necessarily mean that he will consider all of them, but he can assert which ones he can address. Even if Mrs. Thompson talks to him about the inadequacy of some teachers in the school, he should also consider what they are saying, but do an observation of how the teachers are really performing.
I think that the communication error here is that Mrs. Thompson shouldn't have generalized the inadequacy of teachers in the school. These are only based on their observations and it is still the school's responsibility to choose who will teach in the next school year.
If I were Mr. Alonzo, I would tell Mrs. Thompson that the school values their opinion and will do an evaluation. There is a curriculum that teachers need to adhere to and only the school is authorized to decide.
Jeff's fear of the parent-teacher conference comes from the horror stories he heard about the parents in the community and majority of the students in his literature class are not performing well. I believe that this is the cause because the parents in the community are known to complain a lot during the parent-teacher conference. They are uncooperative, angry, and their expectations are unachievable.
