Constitutional and political issues in 1850s in the United States
In 1850, conflicts between the state and slave trade were the main political and constitutional issues. Georgia opposed every congressional activity that anticipated to disrupt the national slave trade, weaken the fugitive slave laws and abolish slavery(Montgomery 300 ). These issues resulted in the unrest for Georgia, a member of the United States.
The major political issue raised by Georgia was the objection to unrestraint the right to free or hold slaves by the standard sovereignty process to the national government. (Tocqueville n.d). Taylor's suggestion to permit California to join the union as non-slave exasperated many southerners. However, majority of the politicians criticized that much of the California land was on South of Missouri line causing tension and unrest.
