Constitutional and Political Issues in the 1850s that Indicated Unrest for Georgia as a Member of the United States
Slavery, civil war, and disunion over the implementation of the Compromise Act were the main political and constitutional issues in the 1850s that indicated unrest for Georgia as a member of the United States (Justice). Georgia’s position on sectional debates to eliminate slave trade and strong denial of political union led to explosive tensions in the region. Similarly, the State did not welcome the decision by the US Congress, which compelled slave owners to free the blacks from the North (Justice). This paper highlights the constitutional and political issues in the 1850s that indicated unrest for Georgia as a member of the United States.
Georgia in a special national resolution held in December 1850 decided to implement the “Georgia Platform Proclamation” contrary to the overwhelming support for pro-Union ideology. Pro-unionists argued that the implementation of the “Compromise Act of 1850” was an instrumental move to eliminate slave trade (Justice). Georgia, on the other hand, indicated that abolitionists were using the Compromise Act to implicate free regions and make the States’ political leaders to appear as the main facilitators of slavery in the South and North (Justice).
