Three Arguments
The person who killed Tom could harm other individuals if he is still free. Already, the murderer has shown aggressive behavior and if he is left free, he could again harm others. Therefore, his freedom continues to be a threat to society. The police should move to arrest him, find the evidence they need to prosecute him and have him locked so that he can pay for his crime. Every life is dear, and no one should take away the life of another. Even when people have disagreements, getting emotional does not always help. Any issues should be resolved amicably, in a rational manner, devoid of wanton violence, such as was witnessed.
If Tom’s murderer goes unpunished, there are likely to be a repeat of such acts of violence since people may assume that they can commit a crime and walk away. The very essence of punishment is to deter crime. Whenever police arrest a criminal, they often want to seclude them from society as they may pose a risk. During their stay in prison, they teach them life skills so that upon their release, they can be responsible members of the society (Zaibert 15). They also have correctional facilities that ensure their successful reintegration into society when their jail term ends.
