There are four different archetypes concerning foreign policy in America. They include the Hamiltonians, Wilsonians, Jeffersonians, and the Jacksonians. The Hamiltonians see the strong partnership between the big businesses and the national government as the key to effective foreign action and domestic stability. These individuals have long focused on the need for the nation to be incorporated into the international economy on favorable terms. On the other hand, the Wilsonians are of the idea that America has a critical national interest and moral responsibility to spread its social and democratic values all over the world, as well as develop a peaceful global community that respects the rule of law (Mead 45).
Jeffersonians believe that the American foreign policy ought to be more concerned with safeguarding democracy at home than spreading it abroad. Throughout history, they have remained skeptical of the Wilsonian and Hamiltonian policies that involve the nation with unfavorable partners abroad or that increase the chances of war. Jacksonians make up a large populist school, which hold that the most critical objective of the American government in both domestic and foreign policy ought to be the economic well-being and physical security of its citizens.
