Why was the death of George Floyd the catalyst for a significant, international, yet localized, mass demonstration against state-maintained inequality and police brutality? Why now?
George Floyd was a 46-year-old man who died under the police's custody in the United States of America on 25th May 2020 in Minneapolis. He was a black American. Before his death, a certain convenience stockpile employee called the police and reported Mr. Floyd to be in possession of counterfeit money, which he used to purchase items. The police officers who came tortured him to death. It was painful for people to see one of their own die from something preventable.
However, after Mr. Floyd’s death, that same week, there were demonstrations all over the US and abroad condemning the police's brutality and other state-maintained inequalities locally and internationally. His death acted as a catalyst for local and international demonstrations. There were several reasons for this; his murder happened during the Covid 19 pandemic that cost people's jobs. The US and other countries worldwide were under lockdown; hence people were forced to concentrate more on their televisions. People, both blacks and whites, had enough time to demonstrate on the streets. Another factor was that his death happened a short time after the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery (25 February 2020) and Breona Taylor (23 February 2020).
