Photovoice Sociology
The use of visual, written and audio communication has been considered to be the best in understanding the message between the sender and the recipient. The use of photographs in sociology has enabled practitioners and others to demonstrate their life experiences and attitudes towards various situations. The pictures tend to explore the view of an individual of the world and their surroundings. The creation of pictures is determined by a person’s socialization and position such as gender, economic status, as well as the view of the society towards the individual. The surrounding and racial position of an individual can best be demonstrated in a photograph. Additionally, the color, tone and texture of the photo describes the meaning of a picture. The manuscript within is a critical analysis of a given photograph to produce meaning and the purpose it communicates.
The photograph is made of a side of a story building made of bricks with plantation of different trees along the side. Additionally there is a slab in the area with the plantation with curves of human beings. The texture in the photograph is smooth with a black and white theme expressing the culture of the African continent during the colonization era. The picture does not reveal any form of motion, but the environment appears to be calm and peaceful. Moreover, the primary structure in the photo together with the buildings behind the main one demonstrate an administrative office in the colonial times. The photograph expresses the authority of the white community over the colonized African nations as all things are modern and constructed in the form of the dominant whites.
The photo illustrates the dominance of the white race and their cultures over the inferior black communities. The reason being, the structures, and landscape of the captured are is more of the white culture than the black. The photograph is highly in line with the Gender Schema theory as it explains how socialization is facilitated by interaction with the environment as well as the perception of the people towards the phenomenon. The calm nature of the environment is high associated with the feminine gender who are characterized by peace, patience, and calmness. The photo is related with my experience as a female by the smooth texture of the items in the photograph. Additionally, the order in which the elements in the picture are organized, and the cleanliness expressed in the photo depict femininity as opposed to masculinity.
