Introduction
Archaeological work on the Hacienda has only been done for ten years (Daniel & David, 31). Thus, vast areas of the Hacienda region remain hidden from the outside world. The reason for this is attributable to the lack of road networks and the dense forest cover. The most comprehensive data sets can be retrieved from the nearby village called Tacos and the pyramid site called Hasta Lavista (31). As a result, the interpretation of data is usually subject to speculation. This paper discusses some of the questions that anthropologists ask and back them up with concrete evidence.
Section A
Culture in the Hacienda Plain changed a great deal over time. How the Zatopec related to their environment and their neighbouring communities shifted continuously. For instance, data gathered from the Zapotec and Nanosec languages reveals that the languages belong to the same family but difference in time made the two languages significantly distinct (Daniel & David, 29). Also, data gathered in recent years reveals that the Totalrecs, the community living between the high sea and the mountains, made surprise raids on the Zatopec centers and retired into the jungle with their loot: ornaments and other valuable goods (31). The linguistic analysis of the two languages reveals that the Totolrec community was not related to the Zapotec: the names of the rulers of the Totolrecs belonged to a different language dialect.
As pointed out above, the linguistic analysis derived from the modern Zatopec and Nanosec dialects and the writings of early Spanish colonists reveal that the two communities belonged to one family. However, the separation of the two communities – over a two to three thousand year period – made the culture and language of the two communities different (Daniel & David, 29). The evidence available reveals that before the split of the Nonosec and Zatopec communities, the Totalrec inhabited the Hacienda plains. The inscriptions found on the dated Zatopec temples point to the Totalrec community. Also, no data or evidence exists, reflecting the existence of another culture in the region.
The various regions in the Hacienda Plain relate to each other in a number of ways. The ocean and the Zatopec Highlands surround the Hacienda Plain on the west and the on the east respectively. The region has experienced limited modern development, with the Nanosec Indians living predominantly in small farming communities that have been spread out. In the highlands, the Zatopec Indians have adopted modern methods of technology: there are modern cities (Daniel & David, 29). The Totalrecs live between the mountains and the sea. Archaeological works reveal that they occasionally raid the Zapotec centres, where they steal ornaments and other products (Daniel & David, 31).
The above considered, the Nanosecs, Totalrecs, and Zatopecs relate to each other in some ways. Since the Nanosecs are predominantly farmers, the Zatopecs depend on them for raw materials to produce items such as ornaments and finished goods in their factories (Daniel & David, 29). The Zapotecs, most likely, also depend on labour from the Nanosecs. Since the data collected describes them as small-scale farmers, their cost of labour is likely to be low. On the other hand, the Totolrecs play a somewhat unorthodox role. Since the Zapotecs are generally perceived as operating at a more advanced level, the Totolrecs occasionally steal from the Zapotec centres and retire into the jungle with their loot (31).
The lifestyle of the communities in the Hacienda Plain, according to the data that has been collected, is different. The Nanosecs seem to have adopted a subsistence type of lifestyle. Research reveals that they are small scale farmers (Daniel & David, 29). As a result, their political structure is, probably, not very developed or well structured: they probably have an elder’s council that makes laws and arbitrates disputes. In addition, they also, most likely, worship their "gods" in shrines, and material possession is not very essential.
The Totolrecs, on the other hand, seem to live the hunting and gathering type of lifestyle. As revealed in the research conducted in the region, the Totolrecs raid the Zapotec centres occasionally (Daniel & David, 31). These acts may be attributed to a general decline in animals and plant cover due to poaching in modern days. Archaeological facts reveal that the Totolrecs were led by their leaders in looting missions (29). As a result, the political structure of the Totolrecs seems to be well defined. This community was, most likely, under the rule of a king or chief, who delegated some duties to his subordinates. Material possession among members of this community also seems to be held in high regard.
Lastly, the Zapotecs have been depicted to have adopted a modern type of lifestyle. This community has been shown to live in modern areas in the highlands where the industrial economy has been integrated into their way of life (Daniel & David, 29). As a consequence, this group has a well developed political structure, with the various arms of government – legislature, judiciary and executive. In addition, the community also, most probably, worships in established centres of worship such as churches and mosques. Material possession also seems to be held in high regard, owing to the modern lifestyle industries that have been erected in the area.
Section B
The Zapotec highlands are rich in gold and other mineral ores (Daniel & David, 29). In addition, the Highlands are also characterised by large open grasslands and an annual rainfall of 35 mm (29). This information, to a larger extent, shows why the Zapotec community is more developed than the Totolrecs and Nanosecs. The Zapotecs are in a position to trade their gold with the outside world and have tourists visit their region to admire that large, beautiful space; thus, exposing the community to outside influences. The Totolrecs and the Nanosecs have to live in secluded spaces; as a result, they have limited opportunities and resources to expand their knowledge.
In addition, evidence shows that the Totalrecs were rivals of the Zatopek community. Expeditions from the University of Pyewaket, on the stone built Zatopec temples, reveal that the Totalrec, who resided in the region between the mountain and the sea, organised surprise raids to the Zatopek Highlands that were led by the Totalrec leaders, and retired to the forest with the stole items (Daniel & David, 29). The before-mentioned information reveals that there was hostility between the Totalrec and Zatopec communities.
Section C
Further research is required to develop solutions to some of the questions that surround the communities in the Hacienda Plain. The following proposal suggests an approach that can be adopted to further the knowledge available on the Hacienda Plain.
