Video Project: “In Your Hands: Life After Prison”
Over the years, the American criminal justice system has recognized the need to adopt strategies that aim at enhancing the re-entry of former prisoners into the society. Although, a larger percentage of ex-convicts leave prison with a determination to change their behavior, the challenges that they usually encounter in the society increases the rate of recidivism. The paper presents a comprehensive and insightful analysis of the documentary; In Your Hands: Life After Prison, and how the American criminal justice system has failed to embrace efficient measures that can boost the re-entry of freed prisoners.
The video sheds light on the harsh environment that ex-prisoners encounter when they are finally released. Surprising, the public services lack proper strategy on how to welcome back former convicts. Stigmatization and discrimination by the members of the society is the main barrier that prevents the ex prisoners from being effectively re-integrated into the society. Both Kim and Xavier are leased from prison only to find that there is no shelter where they can stay. Kim is forced to stay in the streets with her clothes as the only possessions. Despite applying for several job opportunities, she fails to acquire one due to the stigmatization based on her criminal record. It is therefore evident from the video that the public service does not provide the needs of former prisoners such as shelter, employment and food.
