Voter Registration and Participation
Voting is one of the most pivotal ways through which civilians can influence their government decision making. The best definition for voting is a formal expression or choice for a particular candidate for a proposed resolution of an issue or a public office. Voting takes place in the form of a national or regional election. However, voting in small-scale communities can be as important to the voter as voting at the national level. The United Nations universal declaration of human rights states that every individual has the right to participate in the government of his home nation, through their preferred representatives or more directly through participation in lawmaking sessions. Nevertheless, there has been a critical issue of low voter turnout and low turnout during voter registration. It is therefore imperative to highlight the importance of turning out to vote among other challenges in voter turnout and registration.
Recent studies indicate that lack of registration and voter education has led to significant administrative apathy and alow number of voters during general elections. Low voter turnout causes other critical issues such as undermining of the chosen government by the opposition because the opposition leaders lost due to low voter turnout. Democracies derive their legitimacy through theparticipation of qualified citizens (Berent, Matthew, Krosnick & Arthur). Therefore, it is imperativeto conduct countrywide voter education to educate the public more about their right to vote.
