What is Culture?
Modernization and westernization are the chief reasons myriads communities and societies globally have abandoned their traditional cultural practices. Nonetheless, numerous African societies still hold on to their cultural practices as a means of preserving their ancestral origin, uniqueness, and identity. Culture to such societies is a way of life that keeps them in touch with their identity. Such societies transmit these cultural practices from generation to generation through actual practicing, literature, art, and folklore. Culture is a set of practices and belief systems unique to a community or a society transferred from generation to generation through art, literature, social practices or other forms of media; for instance, the Kikuyu dowry ceremony and the Maasai Moran ritual cultural practice.
Firstly, culture is a collection of explicit and implicit patterns in behavior transmitted symbolically from generation to generation and embodied in artifacts. Societies amalgamate their behaviors and pass them on to generations as derived and acquired historical traditions that are conditioning elements for future behaviorism, action, core values, and belief systems (Spencer-Oatey and Franklin 2).
