Russian Hacker Group (Energetic Bear) Breach US Government Networks
In a joint security advisory operation between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) revealed that a Russian hacker group known as Energetic Bear successfully targeted and breached the US government’s networks. The government officials commented that the groups targeted a number of US state, local, territorial and tribal government networks since the beginning of February 2020. The CISA and FBI also said that companies in the aviation industry were also targeted by the hacker group CITATION NPR20 \l 1033 (News).
The FBI and CISA said in the report that Energetic Bear group was able to successfully comprise the network infrastructure and were able to extract data from at least two servers. The two joint organizations said that this was not the first hack that was done by the group to the US networks, but a continuation of previous attacks that the group had done CITATION Cat20 \l 1033 (CImpanu). The FBI and the CISA said that they had received a similar alert in a previous group that they were investigating. They explained that the group was using a combination of VPN appliances and Windows bugs to breach the US government networks. Given these attributes the FBI and the CISA have come out and said that they are certain that the group behind the attack is indeed Energetic Bear CITATION NPR20 \l 1033 (News).
