Question 1: Explain the underlying principles of the tests used in determining the INR and the APPT ratio.
The IRN is the PT ratio from a test sample which is compared with a normal PT sample. Therefore, the IRN act as a harmonizing scale for a test carried out on patients. The normal ranges of PT always vary depending on the test reagents. Prothrombin time (PT) is a test that is conducted to determine the ability of a person to form blood clots. The International normalized ratio (IRN) is done based on the results of the PT test used in monitoring individuals that are on blood-thinning medication warfarin. The whole idea of the IRN is to give a calculation that provides an adjustment to the changes in the PT reagents, thus, allowing results received from different laboratories to be compared (Bellest, Eschwège, Poupon, Chazouillères and Robert, 2007). The IRN value is applicable in situations where the patient is taking warfarin.
