Bubbles In Soda And Why It Makes You Gassy
Introduction
Carbonated drinks, or soda, as it is commonly known, have become one of the staple drinks individuals consume on a daily basis. To those who are not familiar with the basics of science, carbonated drinks are liquids with added carbon dioxide in them. They are usually added with sweeteners to appeal to the tastes of consumers. This is the reason behind the researcher's choice of the topic. The researcher has hypothesized that the dissolved carbon dioxide in these carbonated drinks is released with the body's reaction after ingestion.
This experiment will heavily rely on the scientific method as the use of hypotheses, and their testing will be the core of this experiment. Having set a valid hypothesis, the researcher aims to conduct the experiment in a qualitative manner so that willing participants will be observed after administering them with varying amounts and kinds of commercially available carbonated drinks. The data that will be gathered will primarily be qualitative in nature as the researcher only aims to distinguish the effects of drinking varying amounts of carbonated drinks and how they cause gassiness in individuals. The experiment will be done with the participation of many individuals with different health backgrounds as to account for other possible causes of gassiness that might not be caused by drinking carbonated drinks.
Methods
A group of ten people was asked to participate in this study. The participants were asked not to intake any food or drink 6 hours prior to the experiment. A total of ten 1-Liter bottles of sweet soda were used, and the experiment lasted for 1 hour. During the experiment, the participants were asked to drink 500mL of the soda twice at minute 0 of the experiment. At minute 30, the participants were asked to drink the remaining 500mL of their soda. After another 30 minutes, the participants were asked to fill in a questionnaire composed of five questions. The questions contained in the questionnaire are:
1 Did you feel bloated after your intake of 1 liter of soda within one hour? (Yes/No)
2 Did you experience any burping during or after the intake? (Yes/No)
3 Did you experience being gassy/flatulent during or after the intake? (Yes/No)
4 Do you have conditions that may contribute to having excess gas in the stomach? Please specify.
5 How much carbonated drinks do you intake on a weekly basis?
1 None
2 One can (~355mL)
3 Two cans (~700mL)
4 Three cans (~1.2L)
5 > three cans
Results
The responses from the questionnaire were recorded and tabulated. The results form the experiment can be seen on Table 1.
