Cidade de Deus (City of God )
I have chosen the movie Cidade de Deus (City of God) as my topic for this reaction paper. This two hour movie is a Brazilian crime drama film directed by Fernando Meirelles and co-directed by Katia Lund and was released 2002 and in 2003 it was released worldwide. It is based on real events and was adapted from a novel of the same name written by Paulo Lins. It has a narrative style of telling the story where the narrator is the protagonist. It is about the expansion of organized crime and drug dealing in the streets of Rio de Janeiro’s slum, the City of God which happened during 60’s up to the 80’s. The story starts with a fleeing chicken and running into Rocket (Buscape) the main character and the narrator, and later being trapped in a shootout between the police and the gangsters while holding a camera. After that, the story would start from a flashback from the 60’s, introducing characters that would aid in the growth of the story. It focuses on the lives of these people who live in the City of God showing their struggles and robin-hood like deeds by engaging into crime. In these period the Tender Trio was introduced and were the gangsters at that time.
