The ABC series, Designated Survivor, is a great example of a film with an unexpected character emerging as a leader. Tom Kirkman, the protagonist, is just a Ph.D. holder in Architectural and urban development. Kirkman is named the designated survivor after the president and government are attacked. Immediately he was sworn in as commander in chief. Regardless of him being a politician, he was not a typical one. He never served in the army and had no long experience in foreign affairs. But he was presented with a responsibility he never anticipated and one beyond his expertise. People questioned his potential as a president since he was made the leader by circumstances, not qualifications. Above all, before the incident, he had received a lay-off letter. However, Kirkman overcame all the criticism and doubts he faced by becoming the people’s choice when he completed his term.
