Harriet Beecher Stowe & Mark Twain
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Stowe and Uncle Tom's cabin by Twain address slavery, among other issues affecting black Americans in the nineteenth-century. However, the predominantly white American retort to each varied rationally. While Stowe's piece significantly impacted social perspectives in the United States, Twain's piece was perceived as entertaining but also had little social influence. In his literature, Twain supports numerous motives and claims raised by Stowe. For instance, he concurs with Stowe's anti-slavery perceptions, along with her portrayal of a gentle and dignified black man prevailing over the social evils. Nonetheless, he saw some fault in several elements of her working, including the aspect of language modification, religion, domesticity, as well as her optimism for blacks after accessing freedom. By comparing Stowe's depiction of Uncle Tom with Twain's depiction of Jim, the piece will be able to portray the authors' different viewpoints.
Various similarities and differences between the two authors arise in their respective portrayal of Jim and Tom. It is crucial to start with a scenario in Uncle Tom's Cabin, where a little girl known as Eva, lies in her deathbed. Tom, sympathizes with her, and religiously prays that she may get well (Beecher-Stowe). Twain's presents a similar scenario where Jim is having a discourse with Huck. Although Jim is not portrayed as religious in this case, he also expresses empathy, when he shows gratitude that Huck was safe (Tenney).
