History
Hinduism is an Indian way of life as well as a religion. It is widely practiced in India and many parts of South Asia. The history of the Hindu culture is closely intertwined with the development of the Hindu religion in India since the middle of the iron Age. While Hinduism is considered to be the oldest religion in the world, it is argued that the culture as it now stands is a collection of various Indian traditions and cultures. Hinduism is very rich in culture from its music, dressing, poetry, religion and marriage practices. The aspects of its culture are dated back to 200 BCE where there was a synthesis of Hinduism with the Buddhist and Shamanic influences CITATION Ram18 \l 1033 (Ramaji, 2018).
Beliefs and Practices
Hinduism has embraced many influences from many religious ideas. As such, it is more accurate to refer to it as a family of religions rather than a singular culture. Hinduism is a henotheistic culture as they believe in a single deity, Brahman, while recognizing the existence of other goddesses and gods. Hindu practices include occasional pilgrimages, annual festivals such as Diwali, family oriented rites of passage, meditation japa and recitations CITATION Coh17 \l 1033 (Cohn, 2017). Notably, some Hindus engage in long life monastic practices where they leave all their material and social world possessions in the strive to achieve Moksha. Hindus also have markings on their heads which is believed to deepen their state of meditation and connect them to Shiva’s third eye CITATION Coh17 \l 1033 (Cohn, 2017).
