Instructions Hide In this paper, you will explore what a future sustainable world might look like, and in the process of doing so, extend your previous descriptions of selected terms and explain how they may play a role in aiding us in achieving environmental sustainability on a global scale. The Journey to Sustainability: Imagine a future (probably a long time from now) in which human beings have achieved environmental sustainability on a global scale. That means that we as a species have figured out how to maintain a lifestyle that can go on indefinitely. Humans will exist in harmony with their environment, not needing more resources than can naturally be replenished. What would such a world be like? How might we get there from here? In this final assignment, you will play the part of science-fiction writer, imagining and describing what a sustainable Earth, inhabited by humans, might look like in the distant future. You will need to provide examples throughout to support your descriptions. You should include all the terms that you have researched during Weeks 1 through 4 of this class, underlining each term as you include it. Be sure to expand on your terms and include other concepts that you learned in the course. Provide as detailed a picture as possible of how that future world might function on a day-to-day basis. Your paper will consist of seven paragraphs using the format below to address the elements with the assumption that environmental sustainability has been achieved: Paragraph 1: Describe how the human relationship to nature will be different from what it is at present. Examine how humans will cope differently with the ways that natural phenomena like hurricanes affect lives. Paragraph 2: Describe what Earth’s biodiversity and ecosystems will look like in a sustainable future. Explain what humans have done differently to enable biodiversity and ecosystems to function sustainably. Paragraph 3: Examine how agricultural production will be different in a sustainable future. Paragraph 4: Differentiate between how humans will manage water resources (fresh water and ocean) in the sustainable future compared to how it is done now. Paragraph 5 Examine how humans will meet their energy needs in the future in a way that will enable maintenance of a sustainable, habitable atmosphere and climate. Human relationship to nature and how humans will cope differently natural phenomena In the distant future, the human relationships to nature have changed drastically from what it is today. Humans have embraced sustainability and evolved their lifestyles to live in harmony with the environment. Instead of using natural resources as a disposable commodity, humans will have adopted a “keep, use, and reuse” mentality, ensuring that the environment is never overburdened. To cope with natural phenomena like hurricanes, humans will implement a variety of energy-efficient technologies that allow them to minimize their impact on the environment while still managing to protect themselves from natural disasters (Bensel, et.al,2020). For example, the use of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, has been encouraged, allowing people to power their homes without creating an environmental hazard. Additionally, the Safe Drinking Water Act has been implemented to ensure that the water resources in the region are clean and safe for human consumption. Further, humans will have adopted a “farm-to-table” approach in their food production, where food is grown locally and organically in a sustainable manner. This will result in a healthier and more diverse food chain, as well as a decrease in the amount of food waste produced. Farmers' Markets have become a regular occurrence in many cities and towns, providing the local community with fresh, nutritious food. Additionally, sustainable practices such as permaculture and regenerative agriculture have been embraced, allowing farmers to produce food in harmony with nature. How Earth’s biodiversity and ecosystems will look like and what humans have done differently to enable biodiversity and ecosystems to function sustainably Humans have learned from the lessons of the past, and have implemented changes to ensure that Earth is sustainable in the long-term. We now have a balanced, bio diverse planet that provides us with clean air, safe drinking water, and enough food to go around. The key to this sustainable future was the energy efficiency of our buildings, transportation, and other infrastructure. We have replaced fossil fuels with renewable energy, such as solar and wind power, to power our homes, businesses, and vehicles, while also reducing our dependence on non-renewable resources. At the same time, we have worked hard to preserve and protect Earth’s biodiversity and ecosystems. We have protected vast tracks of land and ocean to allow for the natural cycles of life to occur without disruption. We have also implemented strict regulations on pollution and overfishing, to ensure that the food chain remains intact and that the natural balance of our planet is not disturbed. We have also taken steps to ensure that our food supply is sustainable. We have shifted away from large-scale industrial agriculture and instead focused on smaller-scale, sustainable, and organic farming (OECD, 2017). We have also started to encourage the growth of local farmers' markets, where people can purchase fresh produce from their local area. We have also implemented the Safe Drinking Water Act to ensure that all citizens have access to clean drinking water, regardless of their geographical location. How agricultural production will be different In a sustainable future, agricultural production will look very different from the way it does today. The food chain will be more circular, with less reliance on industrial farming and more emphasis on local production. Farmers' markets will become more common, providing fresh, local produce to communities. The Safe Drinking Water Act will be more strictly enforced, ensuring that agricultural runoff does not contaminate local water sources (World Economic Forum, 2017). Energy efficiency will be a key factor in agricultural production, with farmers using more efficient methods to reduce their carbon footprint. Sustainable agriculture will also become more widespread, with organic farming and permaculture techniques being used to produce food with minimal environmental impact. Management of Water Resources Humans currently manage water resources by implementing various laws such as the Safe Drinking Water Act, which ensures that the public has access to clean and safe drinking water. In addition, we use energy-inefficient methods of collecting, purifying, and distributing freshwater. We also use large-scale industrial methods to extract water from the ocean for industrial and agricultural use. How humans will meet their energy needs in the future sustainably Humans are increasingly turning to renewable energy sources to meet their energy needs in the future. Solar, wind, and hydropower are renewable energy sources that can be used to generate electricity and fuel transportation. These clean energy sources do not emit any greenhouse gases, and so they do not contribute to the warming of the atmosphere. Additionally, energy efficiency measures such as the use of energy-efficient appliances, lighting, and insulation can reduce the amount of energy needed to run a household. Other changes humans have made to maintain a healthy atmosphere and climate include investing in sustainable agriculture practices. These practices include using organic fertilizers, crop rotation, and planting cover crops between harvests. This helps to reduce soil erosion and runoff that can contaminate nearby waterways (World Economic Forum, 2017). Additionally, investing in local food systems such as farmers' markets and community-supported agriculture initiatives promote sustainable food production and reduce the amount of emissions associated with long-distance transportation of food. Humans have enacted legislation to protect the environment and preserve the atmosphere and climate. The Clean Air Act regulates air pollution, and the Safe Drinking Water Act protects our drinking water from contamination.
