Power and Motivation
Leading people in an organization and ensuring that there is a positive correlation between the employees and business process requires the manager to possess not only power to control but also ways of motivating the workers. I work in a small micro-enterprise company where the manager employs both legitimate and reward power in daily operations. Under the legitimate authority, the manager uses the rights bestowed to him by the board of directors. Here, the manager has the power to make the employees comply with the rules of the company. When it comes to creating an effective relationship between workers to foster performance, he uses the reward power. Under reward power, the manager uses various strategies and tools to motivate and encourage the team members to works towards work towards achieving the company goals.
The organization through the manager uses various means to motivate workers. One of them is empowerment. Boykins, Campbell, Corey, Harp, Mason, & Stanton (2015) describe empowerment as the act of energizing and mobilizing employees to take action and complete the given task. The firm has established various measures to create a friendly environment by creating a platform where every team member is given a specific achievable task to accomplish. Those who perform the job are motivated either through promotion or increasing the salary amount.
Effective followership in the organization involves checking and handling various aspects within the firm to ensure peaceful coexistence between all the members in the company. One of the ways the manager creates an active followership is through conflict management. Employees having different ideologies and opinions based on a particular aspect is usual, and it is the responsibility of the manager to make sure that the parties in the disagreement reach a consensus. The company uses various means to solve conflicts such collaborating, compromising, accommodating, and avoiding. The second way through which active followership is created is through delegation and empowerment. Empowering employees is essential since it promotes productivity, innovativeness and proactiveness, trust, commitment, and persistence. On the other hand, the delegation also encourages followership since helps to enhance employee engagement, integration, improved decision-making, and increased efficiency.
Different scholars have come up with various motivation theories which try to explain the concept motivation. One of the scholars is Maslow who says that individual motivation is influenced by the experience of one's goals and needs. He established a hierarchy of needs where the most basic and fundamental goals occupied the bottom part, and less crucial part took the top part. When arranged from the bottom to the top, the needs include psychological, safety, social, self-esteem, and self-actualization needs. The motivation theory was propagated by Henry Herzberg in his The Factor theory. According to him, motivation was influenced by two factors. One of them was hygiene factors and the second was the motivators. Hygiene elements include all those factors whose presence presents no effect and absence motivate individuals. They include the extrinsic elements low in the Maslow's hierarchy of needs. On the other hand, motivators include all those elements whose absence causes no effect, but its presence motivates. An example includes all top items in the Maslow's hierarchy of needs.
In my organization, the most appropriate theory to use is the Herzberg's theory which focuses on two factors motivation. Hygiene factors include a conducive work environment, interpersonal relationships, and company policies. Motivators include responsibilities, training, and delegation. The best power types that will suit the above theory legitimate and re...
