The instrument used in the research proposal for collecting data is semi-structured interviews. The method will ensure reliability in themes under assessment while still offering the chance for follow-up questions according to the interviewees’ responses (Maxfield & Babbie, 2018). Semi-structured interviews will allow the use of unpremeditated questions and probes for clarifying answers and deepening understanding. Moreover, the research instrument will be practical for conducting in-depth conversations, which will enable arriving at a multilayered conclusion.
To address the reliability of semi-structured interviews, participants will also answer closed-ended questions, which ensures consistency. Besides, to address reliability over time, the researcher should explore previous studies done by other researchers regarding the topic. On the other hand, open-ended questions will ensure validity as participants will explain the lived experiences of previous Arizona human trafficking victims re-integrating into society in depth and detail.
Reliability refers to consistency. There are three types of reliability that include interrater reliability (across researchers), internal consistency (across items), and test-retest reliability (across time). Validity refers to the level to which the collected scores represent the variable that the researcher expects to. Besides, four types of validity include discriminant validity, criterion validity, content validity, and face validity.
