The key concept is universalism. Universalism is where everyone is treated equally and is bound by the same set of laws. King espoused a Universalist worldview, arguing that racism was closely linked to American societal systems and that, in order to combat it, larger social movements were necessary. Also, Kant defines universalism as a principle in which an individual should act solely based on that maxim through which one can and at the same time will become a universal law (Teck et al., 2018) King's universalism, like Kant's, was based on natural law and its conviction that there was a higher standard of justice that superseded the laws of earthly states.
Martin Luther King Jr. challenged social scientists to actively engage to abolish racism in a speech he gave in September 1967 at the American Psychological Association's Annual Convention in Washington, D.C. King argues in his speech, "The Role of the Behavioral Scientist in the Civil Rights Movement," that social scientists have a special capacity to help America move past the racial divides that keep us "psychologically and socially imprisoned."(Max Nesterak, 2013). King speaks details about racism as a factor that has led to injustice and division in the states. It is true that racism brings injustice but in places where racism does not exist people also lack justice. A lot of factors contribute to injustice and thanks to Martin Luther King, he came up with the principles of non-violence and steps of non-violence that helped bring justice.
According to King, justice, in its most basic sense, means giving persons what they are due. He viewed the civil rights movement under his leadership as a moral attempt by black people to transform an unjust relationship, a moral effort to establish justice in social and political relations (Fall-Winter, 1984). King continues and adds that love in the sense of ultimate value really is justice. This means that love has the power to equalize us. Once we nature love in our midst then fairness will reign.
In the same way that Martin Luther King fought for justice Kant was also fighting for universalism in the year 1785. Kant who is remembered up to now defined universalism as a principle in which an individual should act solely based on the maxim through which one can and at the same time will become a universal law (Teck et al., 2018). In this instance, Kant seems to be saying that if one person does something, then everyone else ought to be prepared or in a better position to follow suit.
