Migration across the U.S.-Mexican Border: An Immigration Crisis or a Refugee Crisis?
The aspect of globalization has brought about significant benefits for individuals, organizations, and countries. One of its advantages is that people are now able to move from one country to another for different purposes. This movement of world population has been received with mixed feelings by different people. A good example is the current U.S. President Donald Trump, whose policies on immigration are very clear. When he was elected, the President issued somehow tough immigration policies. The latter have generated mixed reactions as well and have contributed to the debate on whether the mass migration of people across the U.S./Mexico border is an immigration crisis or a refugee crisis. Considering that people move from their countries for different reasons, the position taken in this paper is that the miss migration that has been witnessed in the United States southern border is an issue of both a refugee crisis and an immigration crisis.
Before explaining the view that the movement of people across the U.S. southern border is considered as both a refugee crisis and an immigration crisis, it is necessary to define what these terms mean. A good starting point would be to understand what the term ‘crisis’ means. According to the Collins English Dictionary, crisis refers to a situation whereby one or several problems arise, which affect either someone or something. To be specific, crises are said to arise where an occurrence takes place in a manner that generates considerable negative impact on people or governments.
