If all people are considered equal, and their happiness and suffering are considered equal, then the happiness of a few people would not be superior to the pain of another group of people (Westacott). It is not always about happiness, but there is also a need to consider the pain and suffering which was experienced by the colonized nations (Jasanoff). The concept of the greater good can be considered somewhat controlled and manipulated. It can lead to subjective interpretations and conclusions, and the reliability of this ethical concept can be questioned. Utilitarianism can be applied to colonialism, generating both the views that would support and those that would oppose it. If everyone’s happiness is equal, then the happiness of the colonized nations is also equal and important (Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy). It means that the happiness of the colonized people has the same priority, quantity, and quality as that of the colonizers (Santa Clara University). Utilitarianism can be used to interpret different arguments and positions, but several concepts go against colonialism, such as considering everyone equal. Utilitarianism can be loosely applied to create a moral justification for colonialism, but at the same time, it also generates arguments against it.
