1 LGBTQ+- Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and others people recognized beyond heterosexual norms.
2 This is a diverse community with different gender identifications like transgender, gender-fluid, non-binary and have various sexual orientations like bisexual, pansexual and asexual.
3 In the U.S. 7.6% of people are identified under this category means 1 in every 5 GenZ adults are LGBTQ+ (Jones, 2024).
4 These individuals are disadvantaged as they face different healthcare issues like increased mental health issues, higher substance abuse rates, culturally incompetent care and also encounter bias.

It is significant to understand this diverse population as they develop a sense of mistrust towards the medical filed so it is important to deliver patient centered and inclusive care to them. Most effective care would be culturally competent care that needs to be provided to them which will help lessen the discrimination they face. 1 Mental health of LGBTQ+ is 15. To 2.5 times more drastic as they suffer from anxiety and depression in comparison with heterosexual people (Gmelin et al., 2022).
2 Substance abuse is also common among this population which is 25.1% in comparison with 18.8% among heterosexual populations (Garfield et al., 2023).
3 Apart from these, the ratio of chronic disease among LGBTQ+ population is also high (67% of gay and bisexual diagnosed with HIV) in comparison with heterosexual counterparts (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2024). This eventually enhance the feelings of discrimination and stigma in them which subsequently impact their reproductive health and access to care facilities.

Statistically it has been proven that with proper gender-affirming interventions received by transgenders, these has been 60% less cases of depression and 73% less instances of self-harm cases (Adler, 2022).

This will help in increasing access to healthcare services to LGBTQ+ patients.

In 2018, Evan Minton, a transgender man was denied suitable care of hysterectomy at Dignity Health’s Mercy San Juan Medical Center in California because of being transgender, illegal discrimination done against him by the providers (ACLU, 2021). This denial from the care providers instigated a law suit which highlighted discriminatory policies. According to the statistics, 56% of transgenders stated that they have faced discrimination in medical facilities which aimed to reduce the healthcare use and avoidance (Zalabak & Gantioque, 2024).

The case study involves Alice Litman, who was a transgender woman from Brighton, England. Alice was compelled to took her life when she was 20 years of age due to increased wait times of 1,023 days for her first appointment with gender identity development services (GIDS) (Brooks, 2023). This shows a NHS drawback regarding increasing wait times for transgender patients. Based on statistics of William Institutes, it was stated that 81% of transgender in the US thought of suicide, and among them 42% have attempted it. The rationale behind it aligns with the psychological distress among the population (Dowd, 2023).
