A Reflection of the Value of Peer Assessment in Student Learning In student learning, peer review enables students to develop critical thinking skills (Double, et al., 2019). Through this platform students are given a chance to critic each other’s work. This has proven to add value to the learning process through sharing of ideas. In having to review other students work, students get to learn critical thinking skills. Also, learning how to employ empathy makes the students consider how their classmates will feel when they are criticized. Besides, it enhances social and emotional learning skills. This forces students to engage with what they are doing. In addition to being engaged actively with academic activity, self-reflexivity is enhanced thus foster critical thinking skills (Liu, et al., 2020). Peer review encourages the development of objective analysis and evaluation of issues for better judgment. Secondly, peer review is also an effective way of improving students grades mainly on the written assignments. Through peer review, students’ engagement is built-in writing and helps students understand the relationship between their course work and writing. Considering that during peer review in class students are very keen hence a possible mechanism for improvement. This is enhanced by the fact that students are critical to their peers work more than critiques from other students on their work (Ion, et al., 2016). This shows that peer review mainly benefits the reviewer, supports that negative feedback provided for development is mainly not received well. Hence, never taken into consideration. This suggests that peer review is only one way. Peer review encourages direct interaction between the students hence, promoting active learning. In this case, peer review makes the writing process collaborative. This allows students to learn from one another and also, to think carefully about the role of writing in the course at hand. Also, the goals for the assignment are clarified. Since peer review involves giving feedback and receiving feedback, students become active and engaged. This significantly enhances the students learning differently. Moore and Teather (2013) explain that peer review is not only a proactive process that demands the student to give feedback and think about the assignment rubric but to also make a comparative judgment.
