The Getty Kouros: Is it for real?
The Getty Kouros is a controversial ancient rare sculpture purchased by the Getty Museum of California in 1985. The statue is a nude of a male youth standing with his arms placed at the sides and his left leg at the front. When selling to the museum, the seller asserted that the Getty Kouros was from the sixth century BC and had substantial evidence to support his claims. Further, key trustees of the museum and some scientists also verified the authenticity of the statue. However, upon a thorough examination of the art, new indications purport that the statue could be a fake.
After the statue's purchase, experts still questioned the statue's authenticity due to its physical appearance. Researchers have gone to great lengths to determine the statue's chronological and geographical origin, but their efforts have ended up at dead ends. Moreover, current scientific evidence suggests that the previous scientific analysis of the kouros was flawed and the original documents presented were forged.
